Three colossal statues from ancient Egypt are being installed in our #SunkenCities exhibition, which opens 19 May. Discovered in 2001, these statues lay submerged in the waters of the Mediterranean for over a 1,000 years, part of the lost cities of Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus. The amazing discovery of these cities is transforming our understanding of the deep connections between the great ancient civilisations of Egypt and Greece.
This statue depicts the ancient Egyptian god Hapy and weighs more than 6 tonnes and is 5.4 metres – the tallest object to ever come to the Museum on loan. Hapy was discovered underwater in what was the thriving and cosmopolitan seaport of Thonis-Heracleion.
This colossal statue of Hapy will greet visitors to the exhibition, just as it once greeted traders and visitors arriving at the port of Thonis-Heracleion from its position at the front of a temple.
Installation of colossal statue of Hapy. Thonis-Heracleion, Egypt. About 380-250 BC. Maritime Museum, Alexandria.
