Martin: "What’s your name?"
Arien: "Arien. My dad had a thing for this old model that was Asian way back in the 1930’s, her name was Ariel. She was an Asian model. And he misspelled the name. Yeah. And that turns out to mean [grand-] daughter of Poseidon, pure of heart. It has so many meanings. Goddess of fire and…”
M: "Do you have any Middle Eastern heritage?”
A: "I have Egyptian culture in my family and Native American and white. My eighth cousin is Winston Churchill.”
M: "Your eighth cousin is Winston Churchill?”
A: "Yeah. My mom is white. Her name is Jennifer Churchill and my grandmother’s name is Wilda Churchill."
M: "Winston Churchill. Second World War. 1940’s."
A: “Yeah."
M: “Wow. Okay. What brought you to life on the street?"
A: "I was in a living program through GR [General Relief] with my son."
M: "You have a son already?"
A: “Yeah." M: "Oh my gosh, you look like a baby."
A: "I’m twenty-six."
M: "You look even younger. So you were living with your son?"
A: "Yeah, but it turned out to be a crack house. The guy that was running it was a crack dealer and he was using my name to launder money. Because I’m such a square, I wasn’t okay with that. And so they threatened my life and everything. I had to put my son in DCFS [Department of Children and Family Services] custody so he wasn’t on the streets with me and I was booted out of the house." .
