Votive #candles decorated with religious figures burn at an outdoor shrine where worshipers hung dozens of #rosaries, on Holy Friday at El Santuario del #Chimayo (the Sanctuary of Chimayo) in northern New Mexico. The sanctuary is a #Catholic church built in 1814 after #mystical occurrences in the village of Chimayo, which is on the High Road to Taos in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The Santuario is an important site in the rich #Hispanic traditions of Northern New Mexico, and is believed to have healing powers; many thousands of #faithful make pilgrimages to the tiny #church,especially on Holy Friday during Easter week or Semana Santa.
