Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | One hundred years later, the scarred earth at the Vimy Ridge WWI battlefield has not healed. Large mine craters adjacent to former WWI trenches are only a faint reminder that WWI was a high tech, modern war with high tech, modern weaponry. The people of WWI were modern people, much like us today. They placed blind faith in the wonders of modern technology as a force of good and gradually came to feel invulnerable. Soldiers on both sides marched blindly into the world’s first modern mass destruction. They didn’t see the impending peril that lay right before their eyes and were numb to the consequences of the dark side of modern progress until they were all in the grip of apocalypse ... with no way out. All the wonders of modern life that ordinarily made life efficient, exhilarating and powerful not only couldn’t save them from a scale of destruction that was beyond anything that could be imagined...these wonders of modern life were the very same technologies that were destroying civilization and humanity itself. We must never lose sight of what differentiates us as human beings from technology. We are not and never will be machines. WWI teaches us about the vulnerabilities of modern life we face today. No matter how sophisticated the manmade environments we live in become, what keeps us safe from mass destruction is human decency, human judgment and a sober view about the dark side of modern technology and human nature itself.
