Today marks the 5th anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. My decades of documentary work following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster give some indication of the future faced by Fukushima. When Soviet authorities finally ordered the evacuation of towns near Chernobyl 36 hours after the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the residents’ hasty departure often meant leaving behind their most personal belongings.
