Photograph by @thomaspeschak “CRABZILLA” Shooting the world’s largest terrestrial crab on assignment for @natgeo magazine was a photographic challenge like no other. Coconut crabs bear uncanny resemblance to many of the oversized beasts that feature prominently in a slew of 1950 horror films with titles like “Attack of the Crab Monsters” “Tarantula” and “Attack of the Giant Leeches”. I wanted my photograph to pay homage to this cinematic era so I decided to focus on and let the crab’s iconic oversized shadow dominate the picture. Using an array of lightening techniques (remote flashes and torches) I managed to throw the shadow of a crab (that is just out of frame) onto the coral rock wall of a decaying building. My assistant/biologist @wildisee squatted in the doorway and illuminated a second crab walking into frame with his headtorch. For this shot to work the shadow had to be just right, clearly showing the pincers, legs and antennae. It took forever for all the elements to come together. It was only in the early hours of the morning that I finally gazed at this exact image on the back of my camera screen and knew that I could finally get some sleep… and what did I dream of that night… Giant Crabs of course. To see a close up of the mysterious crab behind the giant shadow follow me @thomaspeschak and check my feed in one hour. #seychelles #SIF #photooftheday #crabzilla #picoftheday #photography #horror #scifi #cinema #movies #films @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeocreative
