Photo by @anandavarma. Flowers called Desert gold carpet a hillside in Death Valley as rainclouds recede over the mountains in the distance. The wet winter brought by El Niño triggered dormant seeds to explode into life in a “superbloom” that can be seen only once in a decade.
I just spent two weeks working indoors at a lab in southern California for an upcoming magazine story. On my way home last weekend, I took a detour through Death Valley to stretch my legs and check out the bloom. It was quite odd to be rained on in one of the hottest, driest places on Earth.
