Mary Leakey discovered the earliest known footprints at the site of Laetoli, Tanzania in 1976. Formed by a chance combination of events 3.6 million years ago, they provide a wealth of information about early humans and the environment at that time, and were most likely made by Lucy’s species based on fossils found nearby.
Mary Leakey also found many important early human and ape fossils during her career—including a total of 15 new species of fossil animals.
She conducted much of her research with her husband Louis at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, a site where I did some of my PhD research. Sometimes I feel like I’m following in her academic footsteps! -Briana
