The Aurora Borealis curves like a giant green snake above Levi, Finland. Photographed by @salvarezphoto on assignment for Microsoft (@lumiaxnatgeo) on a #microsoft #lumia950 smartphone More than two years ago I was asked to shoot the Seven Wonders of the Natural World with Lumia smartphones. Grand Canyon, Rio de Janeiro, Mount Everest, Victoria Falls, Paricutin Volcano, and the Aurora Borealis The only assignment that truly worried me was the Aurora. The Northern Lights are the only Natural Wonder that are not a place, they are phenomena. Their appearance relies on the interaction of charged particles given off by storms on the sun hitting the Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field. The sun storms are intermittent, unpredictable, and so are the Northern Lights. They are also VERY dim. Camera phones weakness has traditionally been low light performance. I was understandably worried about shooting a natural phenomena that occurs only at night with only a smartphone. Once I got my hands on the Lumia 950, I was pretty sure that I had a smartphone that was up to the challenge. The night I shot this picture, it was 40 degrees below zero, so cold that the tripod my phone was mounted to burned my fingers when I touched it. Standing in that gorgeous, frigid, moonlit forest, I was equally amazed by the green, pink and red streaking through the sky as I was by the pictures that appeared on the back of my phone. Low light, the last barrier to smartphone photography has fallen. #MicrosoftAmbassador #sponsoredad
