Photograph by @JohnStanmeyer Ghost forest of coconut trees on the island of Pulau Balai, located off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The island dropped by 1.2 meters from the 8.7 magnitude earthquake, March 28, 2005, causing homes along the coast to drop into the sea. The quake also caused a several meter tsunami. Having spent many years documenting the effects of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, I have repeatedly retuned to a place I lived for many years, Indonesia, trying to wrap my consciousness around the awesome power of nature. For a National Geographic story on paleotsunami science, I travel to the remote island of Balai, a 1.5 hour small boat ride off the west coast of Sumatra. It was here that I came upon this ghost forest of coconut trees, submerged in the sea when the entire island sank more that one meter into the ocean. For insight into why we call such landscapes, Ghost Forests...it is the term given to describe vegetation that has submerged, drowned by be too much water, often an indication of massive plate tectonic shifts in the earths crust, a fascinating vista one can take notice when traveling throughout regions along the Ring of Fire or other earthquake prone regions of the world.
