April 9, 1939 Ms. Marion Anderson was scheduled to perform at the concert hall at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.. However, the Daughters of the American Revolution who controlled the hall refused to allow her to perform. With the aid of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the F.L.O.T.U.S. Eleanor Roosevelt, Ms. Anderson performed a very successful and critically acclaimed open air concert, on the same day, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial with over 75,000 people in attendance and a radio audience in the millions.
