Photo by @Gerd Ludwig. Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MKK) is one of the largest steel companies in Russia. On winter weekends, men used to drill fishing holes in the thick ice of the Ural River to try their luck. Knowing that the river was badly polluted by waste from the huge plant looming behind them, they often sold their catch to markets rather than consume it themselves. The Ural River is considered the boundary between the continents of Europe and Asia. To capture the photograph in the mid 90s, I stood on European soil, while the Steel Works are located in Asia.
