@daviddoubilet A curious harp seal pup investigated who and what I was as I swam past the ice. This pups mother had abandoned it to go mate and then migrate north. The pup is in molt, losing its beautiful white newborn fur and learning to swim. Warming trends have caused high pup mortality in the Gulf when mothers had no choice but to birth on poor ice that broke up before the pups could survive. spring 2015 was a good ice season and many pups survived but elevated temperatures may cause limited and weak ice cover again in 2016.
