Photo by @stephenwilkes: A small portion of my final Day To Night of Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. I traveled to Africa last spring to capture my most ambitious Day To Night yet, Serengeti National Park and its many species. I coordinated my visit with peak migration, hoping to capture as many animals as possible. Unfortunately, I arrived in the midst of a five week drought. This meant I was chancing months of preparation only to catch a few animals off in the distance, as migration patterns were thrown off by the drought, and now completely unpredictable. After weeks of scouting locations, I discovered a large watering hole. It was incredible luck—elephants, zebras, wildebeest, meerkats, hippos, they all flocked to the water, peacefully gathering to share this one precious resource. About halfway through the shoot, my assistant and I paused to backup our files, unable to photograph anything while we waited. This is always a stressful process because I spend the entire time hoping nothing happens that I might miss. Minutes after we resumed shooting, this family of elephants marched directly through the frame. Moments earlier and we would have missed one of my favorite parts of the image. I am still in awe of our incredible luck, and the beauty I witnessed in those 30 hours of shooting.
