Photo: @rwmaddenphotog // This young cheetah was photographed on my 2015 Photo Safari in Tanzania. I was lucky to get the animal at rest, as it’s the world’s fastest land animal – going from 0 to 97 kph in three seconds!
Estimates of cheetah numbers are difficult because cheetahs are shy, stealthy, and work as a family unit — therefore challenging to count. Current African cheetah population estimates range from 5,000 to 15,000 to 25,000 animals. Contrast this with the world’s population of chickens — 19.6 billion.
In Swahili, the word for cheetah is duma. Not coincidentally the outfitter I use on my Tanzanian Photo Safaris is called Duma Explorer.
