Surveyors inspect a bare ice #glacier near the Filchner Mountains in remote #QueenMaudLand, #Antarctica. Here, winds that have blown almost constantly over the millenia have compacted the surface of the vast #polar icecap into slick and shiny water #ice, almost a mile and a half thick. Based on their surveys, a large, wheeled C-130 aircraft was able to land here a year later, carrying both supplies for nearby science bases and some of the first climbers to ascend spectacular #mountains that poke through the surrounding #glaciers.
