Some of the world's greatest water athletes make the journey to put their physical and mental endurance to the test in sporting events based on water sports and Tahitian culture include a grueling single-man outrigger canoe (va'a hoe) race, surf-ski competitions, prone paddling distance races, standup paddling sprints and long-distance swims. The island of Bora Bora—known to have the world's most pristine lagoon—sets the ultimate stage for this entirely water-based event in its 15th year. How the Shot was Captured: Over a four day period myself and around 50 other #watermen and #waterwomen from around the world would paddle and swim nearly 100km competing in one of the most grueling endurance and water skills races I’ve ever experienced, The Ironmana in Bora Bora. From a 45km Stand-Up Paddle and 25km prone paddle around the island, to sprints in outriggers, surfskis, and every other water vessel available, we weren’t sure what challenge the race organizer was going to hit us with until the evening before each day. On this morning (Day 2) our challenge was to swim 12 kilometers in the crystal clear waters broken up in stages. To make it even more interesting, before we started the 2nd stage the water was chummed to bring in black tip reef sharks, stingrays, and at least 7 other species in this photo to our starting line. The biodiversity present in this scene was amazing to witness, and luckily I brought along my #HERO4 in a Knekt housing, which was small enough to travel and shoot with while I was competing. I set my camera on continuous mode, ISO 100, protune on and would just pull the trigger every time the frame was filled with subjects. This image captured the beauty of unique landscape and made me stop for a moment and appreciate it rather than being so focused on competing in the race and the pain I was in! #GoProTravel #gopro
