GoPro Featured Photographer - @donaldmiralle About the Shot: @JanFrodeno of Germany crosses the finish line with a time of 8:14:40 becoming the new Ironman World Champion during the 2015 Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on October 10, 2015. Considered one of the most grueling races in the world, competitors must swim a 2.4 mile (3.86km) in open ocean, a 112 mile bike (180.25km), and a marathon 26.2 mile (42.2km) run in 90 degree heat and humidity under a 17-hour cutoff to be called an “Ironman”. How the Shot was Captured: Having covered the @IronmanTri World over a couple decades I am always trying to find a different shot at this race, which is a big challenge. Because the race covers so much ground and you are always trying to catch up with the mass of competitors once they start, you always need to plan out your day and strategically pick and choose your spots. On this day I knew I would start in scuba gear in the water, then jump on a motorcycle, then into a helicopter, then back on a bike to finish the race, so it was going to another crazy day with little room for error. I started incorporating #GoPro’s to my 35mm camera arsenal several years back as it allowed me to shoot multiple cameras in multiples places and not have to worry too much about them. After getting permission of the race organizer I set up a #HERO4 on time lapse mode shooting every .5 second, ISO 100 with protune on affixed to the top of the finish line before the race started that morning. My hope was that Jan Frodeno, who was dominating the sport in 2015, winning the 70.3 World Championships earlier that year, would come through the finish chute with a big enough lead to give up some emotion in the final stretch of the race. About a little over 8 hours later, Jan came through with arms outstretched looking right at the camera with a huge screaming grin as he became the first man in the history of Triathlon to win the Ironman World Championships in addition to the 70.3 World Championships and the Gold Medal at the Olympic Games. Til this day I am amazed how this all came together!
