Alfred Stieglitz was born on this day in 1864. Schooled as an engineer in Germany, Stieglitz returned to New York in 1890 determined to prove that photography was a medium as capable of artistic expression as painting or sculpture. Around 1915, Stieglitz began photographing the view out of the window of his gallery, a practice he continued through two relocations of his business. Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864–1946).
