Files lining the shelves at the Division of Old Records in Surrogate’s Court in Lower Manhattan. @yanapaskova took this photo while on #nytassignment for a story about Peter Mattaliano, a Hell’s Kitchen resident who found a pair of lost letters to Santa Claus — both written more than a century ago — in his fireplace. “I want a drum and a hook and ladder with an extentionisting ladder on it,” reads one letter, dated 1905 and signed “Alfred McGann.” A second envelope was addressed to Santa, in “Raindeerland.” Inside was a letter dated 1907, written by Alfred’s older sister, Mary. “The letters were written in this room, and for 100 years, they were just sitting there, waiting,” said Peter, whose quest for more information about the family took him to the Division of Old Records.
