In this contest, the judge was looking for creative ways to showcase the Sunshine State's natural beauty. Florida is known for its amazing sea life and this up-close encounter with an inflated pufferfish stood out among the entries. Using the surface of the clear water off the Florida Keys to add dimension, the photographer managed an even exposure in the bright sunlight--both above and below the water. The image's simple, graphic composition elevates a comical looking fish to an interesting portrait of underwater life.

The photographer happened upon this fish while swimming in the Florida Keys. He did not provoke it into puffing or harm it in any way. Shortly after the photo was taken he saw the fish deflate and swim away safely.
