Perhaps they should have called her "Small Business Barbie"? When she debuted in 1997, Mattel's Cool Shoppin' Barbie quickly became of the year's hottest Christmas toys, but not without controversy. The doll, the result of a partnership between Mattel Inc. and MasterCard, came with its own clothing store, complete with a full inventory (shirts, skirts, sunglasses, shoes, perfume, and purses) as well as a cash register, bar code scanner, and working credit card reader. The set came with not one but two toy MasterCard credit cards—a small one for Barbie and a life-size one for a child. Many parents and consumer advocacy groups believed that the toy introduced children to excessive spending habits and credit card debt at an impressionable age, but representatives from both companies argued that the set cast Barbie as a shop-owner, not a shopper—an interpretation backed up by the jingle in Cool Shoppin' Barbie commercials: "I'm cool shoppin' Barbie; Got the coolest shop at the mall!
Getting ready for my sale; the biggest sale of them all!
Lots of great buys; try this size!
Cash for these; here's change for you!
I'm cool shopping Barbie; let's order some more!" #HistoricToys #HotChristmasToys #BusinessHistory #JustChargeIt
