Topaz is renowned for its capacity to form large gem-quality crystals, and revered for its color, clarity, and hardness. Strong chemical bonding makes it relatively dense and the hardest silicate mineral. A common misconception is that all topaz is yellow. In fact, pure topaz is colorless, and colors include blue, pale green, and the spectrum from yellow through the familiar sherry orange to pink and even the most rare red. These topaz specimens, pictured above, hail from various localities, and range in weight from 17 carats to 375 carats.
