A field inside the Maya Biosphere Reserve in the northern Petén region of Guatemala that has been illegally cleared of nearly all its trees. Cattle ranchers, illegal loggers and drug traffickers have all laid waste to forestland, in spite of government declarations intended to protect it. An experiment at the Maya reserve suggests that the most effective way to protect forests is to give control of them to the communities who already live there.
