This is Makoko, an African community that houses 150,000 people just meters above the Lagos Lagoon. A grid of waterways and canals connects every home, and residents board long wooden canoes to travel from the main dock to their homes and local shops. In Makoko, canoes act as variety stores and sell everything from fruit to toothpaste. “Life has been completely adapted to this very specific way of living,” says photographer Iwan Baan.
