These gorgeous birds are an icon of the Everglades. They belong to a species known as the roseate spoonbill, and they feed in concentrated pools of fish. That’s only possible when the Everglades’ water flow is healthy, so these birds have come to represent the health of the whole region. Their numbers have dwindled recently to 70 nesting pairs, but photographer Mac Stone is optimistic that the Everglades will thrive again. “Despite all we’ve taken, despite all we’ve drained and we’ve dammed and we’ve dredged it, pieces of it are still here, waiting to be put back together,” says Stone.
