Photo: @rezaphotograph // Struggles on the Nile river // #Egypt I was on assignment for National Geographic on Cairo. In Cairo, amid the rhythmic comings and goings of the traditional feluccas and the stately cruise ships are the true masters of the Nile: the thousands of people who live on rowboats — their home, their refuge, their workplace, and their means of transportation. Before dawn, before the call to prayer from the city’s minarets, they row their boats out from the river’s banks, plowing silently through the water on their way to fish for the day. Two of these fisherfolk, Mahmud, and his wife, Om Sara, have set out on the river. Om Sara rows the boat, her four-month-old baby at her feet. Her two other children are still asleep in the hull. Mahmud throws in the fishnets, hoping that today’s catch will be good. If it is, he will go to the market to sell the fish, while she will gather the nets, fix the family’s only meal for the day, and wash their clothes in the water of the Nile. The two older children wake up, roused by the first rays of the sun. They play quietly aboard the rowboat, unaware of the pollution that surrounds them. For them, the river is a fine setting for their games. The catch is plentiful. Mahmud returns from the market in the crushing heat of the afternoon. The family gets busy tending to their fishnets, their survival tool. They check the nets meticulously, mending any holes. At twilight, they curl up against one another to go to sleep. Om Sara and her husband close their eyes, eager to shut out the sight of the opulent hotels and villas that dominate the riverfront. The other families on the rowboats have also turned in for the night. The Nile falls silent. #cairo #woman #ship #nile #boat #fish #fishermen #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى# عكاس @thephotosociety
