Claudia Maté (@claudiamate) has a CV as colorful and frenetic as one of her trademark seizure-inducing GIFs. The Spanish-born, London-based artist emerged as a key figure of the early 2010’s net-art renaissance, creating works that mimic and push to absurdist extremes the online aesthetic lexicon, from early HTML kitsch to cutting-edge corporate CGI. As co-founder and curator of the eye-popping online platform Cloaque.org, she archived and showcased a whole new generation of net art practitioners. She’s known for avatars that seem straight out of the uncanny valley—of herself, strangers, and celebrities like FKA Twigs and David Bowie (rendered as a blinking eye). She’s called her Instagram a “work diary” and has made it a petri dish of scraps that may yet grow into something new—disturbingly morphed faces, new-rave skulls, and dancing babies.
