Thank you @pjcalder for sending me this brilliant, long-read on iconic (and sadly, self destructive) 60's model Donyale Luna from the Nov 2009 issue of @lucy_yeomans @BazaarUK The 1st black woman to ever appear on the cover of any Vogue, the British one, in 1966 by David Bailey (Beverley Johnson's US cover was not until the 70's). Beverly Johnson later said of Luna: , "she doesn't wear shoes winter or summer. Ask her where she's from? "Mars". She went up and down the runways on her hands and knees. She didn't show up for bookings. She didn't have a hard time, she made it hard for herself." In 1979 Luna tragically died of a drug overdose at 33 yrs old.
