Flying into the Kathmandu Valley is, regardless of season, a fine adventure. Ringed by terraced hills with the crest of the Himalaya to the north it is a scenic flight with an adventurous landing. ✏️ In looking at the local landmarks from above I noticed the lack of traffic on the Ring Road. What would normally be bustling with buses, lorries and motor cycles was pretty empty. The fuel embargo, a strong arm negotiation tactic by India to move the newly adopted constitution to its favor, has slowed the country down. While we managed to keep our plans on track, I feel for the many people in rural areas that need kerosene and LPG for cooking. If the goal is to get the population worked up enough to demand a rewrite of the constitution it doesn't seem to be working. Nepali people are very resourceful, especially in the wake of April's earthquake. ✏️ Speaking of, most of Kathmandu looks solid, with a few toppled brick walls and cracks in buildings. Many of the ancient temples have been severely damaged, yet by and large people are enjoying life. ✏️ Absent though are folks like David, Mungo, Mank and myself. Tourists to visit the country and see the sights. November is the prime post monsoon month for travel. There is an estimated 60% decrease in travelers. Thing are good over here and come visit. ✏️ Kathmandu is the home of the venerable Liz Hawley. No visit would be complete with a stop to say hello. She asked about the data for our expedition, filled out the forms and shared a few insights into her life in Kathmandu over the past 60 years. She is like my Kathmandu mom. She noted I'm going bald (my mom assesses my hair stock and lack thereof with in the first five minutes - as Liz did) and reminded me it isn't proper to have an open mouth in photographs. She was happy to know we were climbing - no flying, riding bikes or other shenanigans she sees as frivolous. She had no idea David was the legit crusher. (David likes this.) Thank you Liz for the years of friendship and humor. ✏️ Off to the ministry to get the permit and (fingers crossed) find my luggage. @davidlama_official @jibanghimire #novemberinnepal #theɹǝɥʇoway #voke_epic
