In contrast to the artists from Europe and the Americas who produced idealized images of Caribbean society, #FranciscoOller depicted more realistic images of his home, Puerto Rico. In Figure in a Landscape (ca. 1893), an Afro-Puerto Rican figure blends into a richly depicted mountainous landscape. This everyday scene, shown just before the onset of a thunderstorm, also speaks to Oller’s direct observation of nature.
