Pendant jewel with scene of the Annunciation (the angel Gabriel’s message to the Virgin Mary telling her she will be the mother of Jesus). This large, elaborate jewel (8.4cm high) is decorated with ‘basse-taille’ enamel, rubies and emeralds. The back is engraved with floral scrolls and a beryl pendant hangs from the base, flanked by two pearls. Baron Ferdinand Rothschild inherited it from his father Anselm, who had optimistically (and inaccurately) attributed it to Benvenuto Cellini.
