I photographed this beautiful and extremely elusive banded water cobra on assignment in the Republic of Congo. This highly venomous species is known to be active by day and night but is very rarely encountered by humans. Please go to @mattiasklumofficial to see "behind-the scenes" how I got this picture lying inches away! The banded water cobra is largely aquatic and spends most of its time in or near water. It is an excellent swimmer and is capable of remaining under water for more than 10 min and can reach depths down to 25 meters (82 ft). The venom of this exquisitely beautiful snake is not yet well studied, but it is believed that the venom is fatally neurotoxic. Ironically it is the lethal characteristics of snake venom that makes it so valuable and sought after for use in medicinal treatments. The toxic components of snake venom have for example both led to the development of medicine against heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's.
