Y. is a gay man from northern Nigeria. He was taken from his home, arrested, held in prison for 40 days and sentenced to 15 lashes with a horse whip. And under Shariah law, he could even have been executed for engaging in consensual same-sex activity. Since Nigeria’s former president signed a law criminalizing homosexuality throughout the country, arrests of gay people have multiplied. @hammond_robin photographed Y. in Nigeria in April 2014.

Almost 2.8 billion people live in countries where identifying as lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and intersex (#LGTBI) could lead to imprisonment, corporal punishment or even death. @hammond_robin is telling some of their stories on the feed @whereloveisillegal. We’ll share more of his work, which appeared on the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #lensblog, for #nytweekender.
