It may be extinct, but this river dolphin is still chomping.
From this 6-million-year-old fossil, @smithsoniannmnh scientists discovered a new species of ancient river dolphin. Today there are only four species of river dolphins, which swim in fresh water. This new species, named Isthminia panamensis, was one of their ancestors but it lived in salt water. Its discovery helps us understand the evolution of the modern species, and the transition from marine to river environments.
