In honor of #NationalDogDay, here’s Owney, the scruffy mutt who became mascot of the railway mail service. He poses here with an unidentified letter carrier.
Owney made friends at the Albany, NY, post office in 1888. He was attracted to the texture or scent of the mailbags and began following them onto wagons, trails, and eventually across the country. In 1895, he made it all the way around the globe, traveling by train and steamship with stops in Asia and Europe before returning home to Albany.
After Owney died, he was preserved and is now on display in our National Postal Museum.
