Photo by @stephenwilkes: "Sometimes when someone pushes, you get stronger,” says Carolyn Parker, photographed in 2006 after Hurricane Katrina on the front porch of her shotgun house in Holy Cross. “And I think that’s what happened, I got stronger.” Parker was among the first to return to Holy Cross.
Some 300 of the more than 5,500 residents have returned. Many of them are living in one of the 18,500 FEMA trailers, waiting for the distribution of government funds to help repair private homes. It is estimated that in the time after the storm, the population of New Orleans was one-third its pre-Katrina total of 480,000.
