Mrs. F.E. Habercht of #Boonville, Missouri walked among dried-up beans in her garden. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer George Tames traveled to America’s breadbasket in 1953 and again the following year, when he took this photo. While 1953 had been a year of surplus — there was simply too much wheat — in 1954, George visited lands blighted by drought. Photos from his second trip west show that while excess was gone, the existential solitude remained much the same. This #nytweekender, we reached into our #archives to share George’s photos of surplus and solitude in America’s breadbasket.
