Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Last year I had the privilege of exploring original German tunnels deep underground at Butte de Vauquois which are not open to the public. 17 kilometers of German tunnels and 7 kilometers of French tunnels still exist at this site but many are not safe for the public to visit. This pile of live German hand grenades sits where they were left a century ago at the end of WWI. Butte de Vauquois is one of the few places where the public can go underground into authentic WWI tunnels. No place like this exists elsewhere on the Western Front. An association of extremely dedicated volunteers oversees the site. The best way to experience Vauquois and the many remnants of WWI nearby is through a close friend, Denis Hébrard. Denis was the chief purser for Air France before he retired several years ago. He speaks numerous languages including English, has access to Butte de Vauquois, and loves WWI history. He and his wife Bénédicte (also retired from Air France) own “La Scholastique”, a wonderful B&B in a small village near Vauquois. Their years of pampering First Class passengers on Air France come through in their attention to detail, small comforts and warm hospitality and kindness you will experience as their guest at La Scholastique. It’s the nicest place to stay when visiting the Meuse-Argonne or Verdun. Denis can be reached at [email protected].
