“Guardian of Warmth, 2014.” When the photographer Mariya Kozhanova looks through her camera at her subjects, cosplayers in #Russia, she sees members of a generation that arrived around the time the Soviet Union fell in 1991, who were “born in times when well-organized society and established identity fell apart.” The myths and beliefs that had held Russian society together were gone, Mariya says. When she first came across #cosplay, she wondered why people were spending so much time and money making costumes of superheroes. The answer, she decided, lay at least in part with their dissatisfaction over what real life had to offer. More portraits by Mariya appeared on the #lensblog.
