Are we there yet? Almost! On Tuesday, the #NewHorizons spacecraft will zip past #Pluto and its five known moons, speeding at 30,800 miles per hour. The spacecraft — which has been traveling for nine and a half years, carrying sentimental mementos from Earth — has logged a respectable three billion miles. It's expected to pass about 7,800 miles above Pluto’s surface. We won't hear from New Horizons until later in the day, when it will turn its antenna back toward Earth to send a brief "Hi, I'm still alive" message. The spacecraft will begin sending back images and other data on Wednesday, when the highlights will be revealed in a news conference. But it will take until late 2016 for all of the data to be received back on Earth. #regram from @nytvideo #nytscience
