Among the millions that entered America through the Port of New York in the 20th century, one group stood out in especially high relief. Some, in fact, were 17 feet tall. And they landed on all fours. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ was among the publications that paid attention when a shipment of animals arrived, often from Africa. Among the “affable group of wild animals” that arrived in May 1957, only a pair of young cheetahs were unfriendly, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported. “It was explained that they were a bit nervous over the hustle and bustle of unloading.” John Orris photographed this giraffe, along with the other animals that made up the $43,000 shipment. This photo comes from the #archives of @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. We’ll share more photos of seafaring animals for #nytweekender.
