I have had intimidating experiences with elephant seals during the breeding season in Antarctica. In fact, just days after this encounter, I was pursued and attacked by a huge (approximately) 7000 pound male while snorkeling. I always give wild animals space, respect and the benefit of the doubt. However, in this case, I can confidently pass along to fellow explorers that it is not wise to be in the water with elephant seals during breeding season. Their hormones make them act irrationally and aggressively on occasion.
