As a filmmaker and photographer traveling the world I've seen a good number of amazing orchids. However this elegant almost sensual Venus orchid, that I photographed in my native Sweden, is one of my absolute favorites! Go to @mattiasklumofficial to see this orchid's magic realm! The Venus Orchid (Calypso bulbosa), also known as the Fairy slipper or calypso orchid is a perennial member of the orchid family found in undisturbed northern and montane forests. They are typically 10 to 14 cm (3,9 to 5,5 inches) in height and their range is circumpolar and includes California, the Rocky Mountain states and most of the most northerly states of the United States; most of Canada, Scandinavia much of European and Asiatic Russia; China, Mongolia, Korea and Japan.
Although the Venus orchid's distribution is wide, it is very susceptible to disturbance like changes in the ecosystem, and is therefore classified as threatened or endangered in several U. S. states and in Sweden and Finland. The corms have been used as a food by North American native peoples.
