Today in 1782: The Great Seal is adopted and the bald eagle becomes standard symbol of the United States.
This Great Seal was made by Belgian lace makers during World War I. After the German army invaded and occupied Belgium, Great Britain set up a blockade of the Belgian borders to prevent supplies from reaching Germany, cutting off 7 million Belgian people from imported food and supplies.
