This tiny island -- damp and wind-swept, cold and bog-ridden; carrying a long history of oppression, violence, famine, emigration, economic boom and bust -- what is the allure that it holds over millions of pilgrims worldwide who come every year to its mystic shores? It would take a book to answer that question, and more than a lifetime to understand its implications. In short form, my list would be: 1) the landscape; 2) the people; 3) the music; and 4) the faeries. Oh, and 5) the Guinness. And then of course, there are the myths, legends, poems, and literature that pour out of this country like sweet water from a gushing spring.
