When I think back to closing that chapter of our lives with those skates in Sochi, I feel proud and excited by the memory of what it felt like to represent my country on the world stage - ready, trained and so prepared. While I’m immeasurably grateful for the career we had and the way the stars aligned for us over the course of our 17 years as a competitive team, it’s not the moments of “glory” that have stuck with me. Neither are they the moments I hold most dear. As a young athlete, it’s easy to look at those who’ve come before you and think it’s the visible, Olympic, and momentous moments that define the respective journeys of those whom you admire. It’s being “the best” that makes them who they are. Rather, I’d like to humbly say that for me it’s the quiet moments of unobserved, seemingly unremarkable triumph that hold weight and have value for me now - years after my competitive career has ended. Those crazy early, crazy cold mornings of exhaustion where Charlie and I simply honored one another by putting in the work. I think back to the days when my grandparents came to watch me practice or how truly tired my parents must have been - picking me up at the rink after their own long days at work, only to drive me home, cook dinner, and help me with homework until it was time for bed. People, love, hard work... that’s all those 17 years on competitive ice really come down to and I think that’s what I love most about sport. We spend thousands of hours and years and years perfecting our craft, but when all is said and done, what happens on the actual field of play is relatively small. How has the experience impacted you as a person? What have the ups and downs taught you? What special memories, relationships or bonds have you formed along the way? Anyway, I could go on and on but seeing as this is an Instagram caption and not a TED Talk, I’ll just say “thank you.” To those who were a part of our journey then and those who follow and support us now - thank you. 🙏🏼 Lastly, big thanks to @fskating_arts for this beautiful art!
