The artist Vladimir Borovikovsky, the son of a Ukrainian Cossack, was propelled to fame by Catherine the Great after she came across his work during a visit to southern #Russia in 1787. This masterful #portrait of a Russian nobleman was totally unknown until its discovery in 1995. Now on view in #London until Tuesday.
