The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer George Tames photographed visitors to the Lincoln Memorial in #WashingtonDC in 1959. The memorial was dedicated 93 years ago this week, in May 1922. On the day of its dedication, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ called it “magnificent and compelling in its purity of line and simplicity.” Thousands gathered nearby to watch and listen to the ceremonies. “Amplifying devices, cleverly concealed so that they did not detract from the beauty of the memorial, carried the speakers’ voices several hundred yards, and by the same means the speeches were sent broadcast by radiophone.” #tbt #lincolnmemorial #archives #nationalmall
