Aerial view of the Mount Lyell area near Queenstown, Tasmania, in Australia showing deep eroded gullies and bare multicolored hills due to open cut mining. The discovery of gold in the Queen River valley in 1881 first brought prospectors to the area, followed by the discovery of rich copper and silver deposits on Mount Lyell. In 1895, the first smelters began to operate. In 1900, Queenstown was the third-largest town in Tasmania, but after 20 more years of mining the rain-forested hills around the town had been stripped bare to feed the furnaces. Uncontrolled pollution from the smelters was killing any vegetation that hadn't been cut down. In 1969, the smelters closed, though some mining continued.
